Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing is a holistic method for releasing stress, trauma and inner blockages that have become lodged in the body. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, this method is based on the body's natural ability to regulate itself and restore inner balance.

SE does not define trauma primarily by the event itself, but by the physical reaction to it. In threatening situations, the nervous system can go into a state of fight, flight, freezing or collapse. If the mobilized “survival energy” is not discharged, the body remains on alert, which can lead to a trauma disorder.

An event becomes a trauma if it overwhelms the individual's psychological coping abilities and causes a feeling of helplessness. Traumatizing experiences can occur in many life situations, such as falls, accidents, operations, serious illnesses, injuries, the loss of a close person, neglect in childhood or prenatal threats in the womb, war, natural disasters or experiences of violence. Even seemingly ordinary events such as medical treatments or witnessing violence on television, in the cinema or in video games can cause trauma.

Through targeted awareness of bodily sensations and mindful exercises, access to one's inner self-healing powers is made possible. Trapped energies that have arisen from traumatic experiences are gently and effectively released in practice. This leads to noticeable and lasting results.
